CHARITE Artificial Disc
The first total disc replacement used on a widespread basis. The first disc was implanted in 1984.
Adherence to appropriate selection criteria is key for favorable results.
The concept for the CHARITE disc was developed by Karin Buttner-Janz and Kurt Schellnack in the Charite Hospital in Berlin, Germany, in th early to mid 1980s.
There are favorable long-term follow-up data from Europe and clinical trials supporting the saftey of the device.
Results of the randomized study regulated by the US FDA demonstrated that the safety and effectiveness of the CHARITE was as good as or better than fusion in the treatment of disc-related pain.
Preserves motion at the operated segment, even in long-term studies
